Introduction
There are golf courses you play and courses you experience. Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin is firmly in the second category. Host of three PGA Championships and the 2021 Ryder Cup, this is Pete Dye's masterpiece along the Lake Michigan shoreline. After playing courses across the Caribbean, the Midwest, and Florida, Whistling Straits sits at the top of my list — and it earns that spot. I shot an 83 hitting the ball as poorly as I have all year, eagled the 2nd hole, nearly made a hole-in-one on the 3rd, and would go back tomorrow without hesitation.
The Course:

Whistling Straits is visually stunning from the first tee to the 18th green. The layout hugs the western shore of Lake Michigan in a way that stops you mid-round just to take it in. Dye crafted a links-style course that feels simultaneously ancient and dramatic — fescue-lined fairways, cavernous bunkers, and elevation changes that frame Lake Michigan as a constant backdrop.
The genius of the design is in its deception. Tee shots that look impossibly narrow from the box open up considerably once you reach your ball. The intimidation is intentional and relentless, but the course is fairer than it appears. That said, miss in the wrong spot and you'll know about it.
Two holes will stay with me forever. The 2nd hole — where I made eagle — plays along the lake with a risk-reward second shot that rewards commitment. The 3rd hole — where my tee shot stopped one foot from the cup — is a par three that plays directly toward the water with nothing but sky and Lake Michigan behind the pin. Even in my worst ball-striking round of the year, this course kept delivering moments worth remembering.

The caddies at Whistling Straits are among the best I've encountered anywhere. They know every slope, every wind pattern, every deceptive pin position — and they communicate it clearly. On a course this demanding, that knowledge is the difference between a good round and a great one.
The brat at the turn deserves its own mention. Simple, perfect, exactly what you want mid-round on a Wisconsin links course. Pace of play at 4:40 is about right for what the course asks of you. The entire Kohler operation runs with the kind of quiet efficiency that lets you focus entirely on the golf.

At an estimated $600–700 as part of a Kohler package, Whistling Straits is the most expensive round in the portfolio — and the easiest to justify. This is a Ryder Cup venue, a PGA Championship host, and one of the great golf experiences in the world. The price reflects that, and the experience delivers on every dollar.

Whistling Straits deserves every bit of its high ranking among the world's great courses. It's a bucket list round, yes — but unlike most bucket list courses, it's one you'd play on a loop if geography and budget allowed. The views, the design, the caddies, the sheer drama of every tee shot along Lake Michigan — it all adds up to something genuinely special. An eagle, a near hole-in-one, and an 83 on my worst ball-striking day of the year. That's what this course does to you.
