Introduction

Main Inn
Nestled within the serene marshlands of the May River, Montage Palmetto Bluff is a luxury resort in South Carolina that blends timeless Southern charm with modern indulgence. Spanning over 20,000 acres of pristine Lowcountry beauty, this enchanting retreat feels like stepping back in time — a modern estate designed to resemble a 19th-century village. Stroll beneath moss-draped oaks, past gas-lamp-lit streets, and through storybook squares that capture the essence of the South. If you’ve ever dreamed of living in a luxurious Southern town where elegance meets tranquility, this is your escape.
We spent a weekend at Montage Palmetto Bluff in September 2025 and were absolutely wowed by every detail. From complimentary bikes and five-star dining to a world-class spa and Top 100 ranked golf course, this resort truly checks all the boxes for a luxury getaway. It’s rare to find a property that delivers on every promise — but from arrival to departure, we experienced flawless five-star service and genuine Southern hospitality at every turn.
Your journey into the Palmetto Bluff lifestyle begins at a stately, gas-lamp-lit gatehouse. From there, a meandering drive carries you deeper into the South Carolina marshlands, setting the tone for the serenity ahead. Upon arrival at the Inn — an opulent plantation-style mansion overlooking the river — friendly valets whisk away your luggage while you’re welcomed with the Carolina signature cocktail: peach sweet tea with a whiskey floater. Now that’s how to start a vacation in style. As you stroll toward your accommodations, the lush landscape and quiet sophistication invite you to unwind and savor the effortless elegance that defines Montage Palmetto Bluff.
Accomodations:
★★★★★
- Accommodation Sitting Area
- Accommodation King Bed
- Accommodations Balcony
What more could you possibly want in a luxury resort stay than high-end bath amenities, Italian villa–inspired bathrooms, plush furnishings, and bedding that feels like sleeping on a cloud? Every detail at Montage Palmetto Bluff has been designed with comfort and sophistication in mind. Even the robes come in his and hers sizes — a small but incredibly thoughtful touch that perfectly captures the resort’s attention to detail.
If you’re planning your stay, be sure to reserve a lagoon-view room. The serene water views are simply mesmerizing. I could sit on that balcony for hours, watching the gentle rhythm of the May River Tributary and the passing riverboat traffic (and truthfully, I did).
We stayed in what the resort classifies as a “standard” room — though there was absolutely nothing standard about it. From the elegant design to the quiet luxury that defines every inch of the space, it felt indulgent in all the right ways. I can only imagine the level of opulence and grandeur found in one of the suites.
Cuisine:
★★★★★
It’s rare to visit a luxury resort where every single meal exceeds expectations — but Montage Palmetto Bluff accomplished just that. Typically, even at resorts of this caliber, there’s one restaurant that struggles to keep pace with the others. Not here. Each dining experience at Palmetto Bluff felt like a beautifully orchestrated culinary journey, where creativity, flavor, and presentation harmonize perfectly.
What impressed me most was the resort’s ability to execute both casual Southern-inspired fare and refined haute cuisine with equal mastery. Whether it was a relaxed lunch overlooking the lagoon or an elegant multi-course dinner, every dish reflected the same commitment to quality and artistry that defines the Montage dining experience.
Breakfast: Mornings at Montage Palmetto Bluff are a delicious affair, no matter where you choose to dine. From elegant sit-down breakfasts to quick bites by the river, each venue offers a distinct way to begin your day in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Octagon
Located in the main Inn, Octagon delivers the classic hotel breakfast—but elevated with that unmistakable Montage culinary flair. From the first sip of coffee to the final bite, everything feels refined yet approachable. Your meal begins with what might be one of the best beignets you’ll ever taste—warm, airy, and dusted just right. Pair them with fresh-squeezed juice or a mimosa and prepare for a morning as indulgent as the surroundings.
Buzz
For something more casual, Buzz—the charming coffee shop at the River House—offers a relaxed but equally satisfying start to the day. Here you’ll find gourmet breakfast sandwiches, freshly baked pastries, and even a thoughtfully curated charcuterie board for the continental epicurean. Grab your favorite latte and take it out to the River House porch, where the May River views pair perfectly with your morning caffeine fix.
Moreland Village
If you’re up for exploring deeper into the property, head to Moreland Village, a scenic area that feels worlds away from the main Inn. This neighborhood features a quick-service breakfast kiosk, ideal for guests on the go or those venturing out for a morning bike ride. While we didn’t make it that far during our stay, the setting alone—framed by marsh views and whispering oaks—makes it worth the short journey.
Octagon:
Located inside the Inn, Octagon may appear at first glance to be your standard hotel restaurant — but it’s anything but standard. This elegant dining room perfectly captures the spirit of Southern hospitality and refined Lowcountry cuisine, all with that signature Montage flair.
From the very first bite, Octagon impresses. We started with the shishito peppers and crab fried rice, both beautifully executed and bursting with layered flavor. The peppers offered just the right touch of heat, balanced by the richness of the crab and delicate seasoning. For our entrée, the tenderloin stole the show — perfectly cooked, melt-in-your-mouth tender, and plated with the kind of care you expect from a five-star resort restaurant. Yeah… it was that good.
Of course, a decadent meal deserves an equally memorable pour, and Octagon’s extensive wine list does not disappoint. The sommelier here is not only knowledgeable but genuinely passionate about curating the perfect pairing. I highly recommend putting them to the test — ask for a boutique vintage that complements your meal and let your culinary journey unfold glass by glass.

May River Grill:
Dining at the May River Grill is a bit more exclusive — and that’s part of its charm. Access is limited to Palmetto Bluff members and guests with a tee time at the May River Golf Course, so consider it a well-earned reward for hitting the links. If you’re fortunate enough to score a reservation, prepare for a relaxed yet indulgent meal that celebrates upscale Southern fare in a laid-back setting.
We enjoyed lunch here before our round of golf, and it was the perfect way to fuel up. Doug ordered the Trio of Salads, a beautifully presented assortment that offered both freshness and creativity. I opted for the Korean Chicken Wrap, which had great flavor but came with a generous helping of kimchi — a bit too generous for my taste. Once I adjusted the ratio, though, it was delicious.
The real standout, however, was the house-made potato chips with onion dip. Crisp, golden, and perfectly seasoned, they were absolutely addictive — the kind of snack you keep reaching for long after you’re full. If you dine here, do yourself a favor and order them as a side. Trust me, they’re worth every bite.

Buffalos: The Perfect Casual Spot at Palmetto Bluffs
For a more relaxed dining experience, Buffalo’s hits all the right notes. This lively Lowcountry restaurant offers a high-energy bar scene paired with exceptionally executed casual fare — proof that even informal dining at Montage Palmetto Bluff maintains a level of polish and precision.
We started with the Dip Duo and Deviled Eggs, both flawless openers that set the tone for a fun, flavorful meal. The Asian Noodle Salad delivered a refreshing mix of crunch and zest, while the Double Double Burger satisfied every craving for indulgent comfort food. Each dish was perfectly timed, beautifully presented, and full of flavor — a testament to the kitchen’s attention to detail.
For an added treat, ask to meet Chef de Cuisine Steve O’Neill. He runs a tight ship and oversees every plate with care, ensuring each guest enjoys the kind of quality and consistency that defines Montage dining. Whether you’re stopping in for lunch after a bike ride or ending the day with cocktails and conversation, Buffalo’s is the perfect spot to unwind without sacrificing sophistication.
River House: Fine Dining with Southern Elegance at Montage Palmetto Bluff
We absolutely loved River House — so much so that we couldn’t resist dining there twice during our stay. This signature fine dining restaurant at Montage Palmetto Bluff perfectly embodies Southern sophistication, offering an elegant yet inviting atmosphere paired with truly exceptional cuisine.
Every dish we tried was outstanding. The Lobster Bisque was rich and velvety, the Venison Tenderloin perfectly cooked, and the Crab Cakes packed with delicate sweetness and flavor. The Fried Duck and Risotto were equally impressive — beautifully balanced, artfully presented, and deeply satisfying.
And then came dessert. The Cheese Plate was a delightful transition into something sweet, followed by the Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Pie, which was as stunning as it was delicious — a refreshing, whimsical finish to an unforgettable meal.

Bar Scene:
★★★★★
- Speakeasy Hidden Door Hush
- Speakease Bar entrance Hush
Montage Palmetto Bluff offers a collection of exceptional bars, each with its own personality and charm—perfect for winding down after a day of exploring the South Carolina Lowcountry. Whether you’re craving a craft cocktail, a scenic river view, or a lively social setting, the resort’s bar scene delivers a memorable experience at every turn.
For something truly unique, make your way to the resort’s hidden speakeasy, Hush. Tucked beneath the River House, this intimate jazz lounge is accessed by slipping behind a discreet mirror—an experience as indulgent as the cocktails themselves. With its moody lighting, plush seating, and swanky Prohibition-era ambiance, Hush is a must-visit for cocktail lovers.
If it’s river views you’re after, head to the River House Bar. Enjoy a handcrafted drink on the screened porch and watch the peaceful flow of the May River—or catch your favorite game on one of the porch’s flat-screen TVs. It’s the perfect blend of relaxation and refinement.
Sports fans will also appreciate the vibrant atmosphere at the Octagon Bar, where multiple flat screens make it easy to keep up with your team—whether you’re cheering for the SEC or watching the Big Ten pull off an upset. Pair your viewing with a well-made cocktail or a glass of wine from the resort’s impressive list.
For a high-energy setting, Buffalo’s Bar offers a louder, more fast-paced environment ideal for socializing over drinks. It’s casual, fun, and full of Lowcountry charm.
No matter which bar you choose, you’ll enjoy thoughtful service, expertly crafted beverages, and the unmistakable Montage touch. Each venue offers its own unique take on luxury resort nightlife, ensuring your evenings at Palmetto Bluff are every bit as memorable as your days.
Golf:
★★★★★
- Iconic Palmetto Bluff Logo
- Golf Hole 10
- Golf 4
- Golf 3
- Golf 2
- Golf 1
While Montage Palmetto Bluff offers a truly exceptional golf experience, it’s important to note that the resort features only one 18-hole championship course. This means that if you’re planning a long weekend dedicated exclusively to golf, you’ll likely want to incorporate a few off-property rounds. That said, the on-site May River Golf Course is reason enough for any golfer to visit.
Consistently ranked among the Top 100 Golf Courses in the United States, the Jack Nicklaus–designed May River Course is immaculately maintained and showcases the Lowcountry’s natural beauty with sweeping marsh and river views. Doug played the course on Thursday and especially appreciated the thoughtful layout and pristine playing conditions. His caddie—who has been carrying a Palmetto Bluff bag for over 20 years—offered expert insight throughout the round. Doug’s favorite hole was the 18th, thanks to its memorable risk-reward design that delivers a thrilling finish.
If you're looking for more than what the May River Course and the small par-three course can offer, you’ll need to seek additional tee times off-property. Doug played both Old South Golf Links and Colleton River Club, and the experiences were vastly different. Old South, a public course, provided an acceptable but underwhelming round, highlighted by an exhausting six-hour pace of play—Doug recommends skipping this one. Colleton River, however, delivered a standout experience with pristine course conditions and a challenging coastal wind. It’s a course Doug would gladly play again.
Whether you're a dedicated golfer or simply enjoy a scenic round during your luxury getaway, Palmetto Bluff offers elite on-site golf paired with additional regional options for those craving more variety.
Pools and Fitness Center:
★★★★★

Pool
Montage Palmetto Bluff offers an exceptional selection of luxury swimming pools and wellness amenities designed to elevate every part of your stay. Guests have access to three beautifully maintained pools, each offering its own unique atmosphere.
At The Inn, you’ll find a serene adults-only pool, perfect for unwinding in complete tranquility. Just steps away, the stunning family pool sits along the edge of the lagoon, offering picturesque views and a relaxed Lowcountry vibe. For even more space to splash, sunbathe, or unwind, the River House Pool provides an additional oasis for guests to enjoy throughout the day.
If you’re looking to stay active, the resort’s state-of-the-art fitness center delivers everything you need—from modern strength and cardio equipment to a full schedule of daily group fitness classes. Whether you prefer yoga, cardio training, or guided strength sessions, there’s something for every fitness level.
For those who want to pair activity with exploration, the property also offers guided conservation hikes led by knowledgeable naturalists. These immersive walks provide a deeper understanding of the region’s protected marshlands, wildlife, and environmental preservation efforts—an enriching way to move your body while connecting with the Lowcountry’s natural beauty.
With its blend of relaxation, wellness, and outdoor adventure, Montage Palmetto Bluff ensures guests can create their perfect balance of leisure and fitness throughout their stay.
Spa:
★★★★★
- Spa Sauna
- Spa Lounge Fireplace
- Spa Locker Room
- Spa Hot Tub
I rarely award a five-star designation to a resort spa, but Spa Montage Palmetto Bluff earns every single one. This serene haven rivals the most prestigious destinations I’ve visited, ranking right alongside the Sanctuary Spa at Kiawah Island and the Kohler Waters Spa at The American Club. From the moment you step inside, it’s clear that this is more than a spa—it’s a luxury wellness retreat where every detail has been thoughtfully curated to soothe the body, calm the mind, and elevate the spirit.
I judge resort spas on three key criteria: amenities, customer service, and treatment quality. Montage Palmetto Bluff delivers five stars in each category.
- Spa Amenities
The facilities are immaculate and indulgent in every sense. Upon arrival, guests are provided with a plush robe, spa sandals, and a personal locker to store belongings before beginning their journey into relaxation. Plan to arrive at least an hour before your treatment to take full advantage of the amenities—a warm soak in the hot tub, a refreshing cold plunge, a dry sauna or aromatic steam, followed by a quiet rest wrapped in a blanket by the fireplace.
Every element of the facility is pristine, but the steam room deserves special mention. Unlike many spas where the humidity carries a hint of mildew, this one was flawlessly maintained and refreshingly pure. The subtle aroma and spotless environment made it one of the best I’ve ever experienced.
- Customer Service
The staff at Spa Montage embody what five-star service should be. The spa attendants are discreetly attentive, ensuring that guests are always comfortable, hydrated, and completely at ease. The level of detail in cleanliness, presentation, and care is unparalleled—every visit feels personal and perfectly orchestrated.
- Spa Treatments and Quality
The treatment menu is extensive—almost overwhelmingly so—with an array of massages, body rituals, facials, and specialty therapies inspired by both global traditions and the natural beauty of the South Carolina Lowcountry.
On my first day, I experienced the California Wildflower Ritual, the signature treatment of the Montage brand. This 120-minute indulgence is the ultimate in massage-focused relaxation. The session combines rhythmic hand strokes, a heated poultice, aromatic soufflé wrap, and gentle vibrational therapy built directly into the massage table. With soothing music and soft resonance enveloping you, it’s impossible not to drift into a deep, restorative state.
On my second visit, I tried the Carolina Kur Experience, a multi-phase ritual that lives up to its name. It begins with a full-body exfoliation using your choice of aromatic scrub, followed by a warm mud wrap and a scalp massage that melts away tension. After rinsing off in a steamy shower, you’re guided into a luxurious soaking bath—perfect for unwinding with a good book—before finishing with a moisturizing treatment that leaves your skin feeling like silk and your mind completely renewed.
Both treatments were exceptional, but if you have time for only one, I’d recommend the California Wildflower Ritual for its deeply relaxing, continuous flow. The Carolina Kur is equally rewarding but involves more movement between treatment areas. Either way, you’ll leave feeling refreshed, radiant, and utterly transformed.
Additional Activities:
Beyond its luxurious accommodations and elevated dining, Montage Palmetto Bluff offers an impressive lineup of activities designed to help guests fully immerse themselves in the natural splendor of the South Carolina Lowcountry. With miles of scenic pathways winding through ancient oaks and marshland, guests can easily explore the property by complimentary bicycle or rental golf cart, discovering peaceful waterways, wildlife, and breathtaking views along the way.
For those who love the outdoors, the resort delivers exceptional hunting, fishing, and boating opportunities. Cast a line in the surrounding rivers, charter a boat for a serene cruise at sunset, or join a guided sporting excursion that showcases the region’s rich natural habitats. If you prefer land-based adventure, the equestrian center offers memorable horseback riding experiences—an unforgettable way to soak in the beauty of the preserve.
A leisurely afternoon can be enjoyed browsing the boutiques at River House Village and Moreland Village, both offering charming shops perfect for window shopping and discovering local treasures.
And no visit is complete without climbing the iconic Moreland Treehouse, where sweeping, panoramic views of the preserve await. It’s a peaceful escape that perfectly captures the magic and serenity of Palmetto Bluff.
Whether you're exploring by bike, casting a fishing line, saddling up for a trail ride, or simply soaking in the beauty from above, Montage Palmetto Bluff offers endless ways to experience the charm, adventure, and natural elegance of this luxury Lowcountry retreat.
